Look We Love: Going Nude

While I, like many, love wearing black, in the past year I have found love on the other end of the spectrum with beautiful nude and neutral shades. And here’s a little fun fact: Neutrals actually have the same slim-down effect as their dark counterparts and going light head-to-toe can smooth out any rough patches and can make you appear longer and leaner.

In addition to being figure-friendly, neutral shades are also high versatile and have an ethereal quality that can’t help but make you feel pretty. As is the case with black, there are countless ways to wear your neutrals.

You can keep clean and simple by forgoing the accessories like Kate Bosworth, who let her blush-colored Calvin Klein dress stand alone,  or use your nude backdrop as a foundation for fun jewelry pieces, like Nicole Richie who accesorized her chic L’Wren Scott sheath with piles of fun pieces from her House of Harlow line.

Take the monochrome route with nudes head-to-toe (a major trend for Fall 2010, fyi) or contrast these soft shades with darks or brights.  I personally love juxtaposing soft neutrals with tough pieces (think biker boots, bomber jackets, boyfriend blazers, chunky knits patterned tights and so on), like Taylor Momsen who teamed an ethereal slip-dress with a pair of Giuseppe Zanotti biker boots. The most imortant thing to remember is to stay true to your personal style and wear your nudes in a way that makes you feel comfortable and confident.

As we transition from winter to spring, I think it’s time that we all brighten up with some stunning neutral shades. [Continue reading...]

A Guy’s Take On Female Fashion

When Sabrina and I started A New Mode, I would joke about how I could care less about female fashion and yet we were starting a fashion site.  Truth is, I still don’t care… but now that the site is almost a year old, I am at least familiar with what women are wearing.

Every so often I’ll be working on a collage for the site and I’ll start talking to Sabrina about the things that the celebrities are wearing with my offensively male opinion. Now she’ll probably regret it, but Sabrina picked out a few looks that girls would consider fashionable or ‘trendy’ and asked me to provide some commentary.

I warned her that I was going to be honest.  So before I begin, let’s just be clear: half of these things I would never notice, but since I’m writing this article I looked extra close.  I just didn’t want any women to be confused and think that guys actually care about female fashion. ;)

Let’s begin… [Continue reading...]

Wardrobe Must: Not-So-Basic LBDs

I believe that a closet should contain multiple LBDs. I mean, things like shape and silhouette make a difference when in comes to creating a look and I have yet to find a single LBD that can suit all my needs.

This season marked a major LBD comeback and our favorite closet staple now comes in a variety of styles- the micro mini, the backless, the plunging neck, the long sleeved, the cut-out, the leather, the lace. While this style staple was once synonymous with simplicity and considered the perfect foundation for statement-accessories, the new LBDs do all the talking and don’t require additional flourishes.

A not-so-basic LBD puts a definate end to the ubiquitous closet-full-of-clothes-and-nothing-to-wear predicament and can serve as your fool-proof go-to time and time again.

Trend To Try: Beyond Bright Shoes

These woeful economic times have ushered in a push towards the cheerful and exuberant in the fashion department. Bright shades were a big trend for summer and will be a HUGE one come fall. I am especially loving bold and bright shoes as a means for getting in on this trend. There really are no rules when it comes to rocking this look.

At this year’s Teen Choice Awards, bright pumps were the real stars electrifying the green carpet. Cameron Diaz gave her soft gray Alexander McQueen shift dress a jolt by teaming it with a pair of electric blue Pierre Hardy pumps. Leighton Meester took her flirty striped Louis Vuitton dress to the next level with a standout pair of red Brian Atwood pumps. Audrina Patridge wasn’t afraid to really push the envelope, pairing a magenta Zuhair Murad dress with piercing blue Courtney Crawford pumps.

At the CW Upfronts, Ashlee Simpson added an electric jolt to her white top and pencil skirt combo (both from DSquared2) with a killer pair of powerhouse pink Lanvin pumps. Fergie also used a pair of neon shoes to take her look from basic to wow-worthy, teaming a John Richmond Jersey dress with standout Jimmy Choo sandals at the March of Dimes 34th annual Beauty Ball.

Draw inspiration from any of these lovely ladies or rock the look on your own terms, either way, you’re sure to make an unforgettable entrance. To help you on your way, I’ve rounded up a selection of bright pumps that I am currently coveting.

Get the Look: Boho-Rock Accessories

Ah, summer…the official season of musical festivals and the perfect season to channel your inner hippie chick.

The bohemian trend has seen a great evolution in recent seasons. When the style originated in the 1960s and ‘70s, it was more about a free-spirited lifestyle. Then a few years ago, Sienna Miller kick-started “boho-chic” with her effortless combination of gypsy and luxe. Head-to-toe bohemian can seem a bit outdated these days, but when infused with a little rock ‘n roll, it becomes modern and relevant.

Accessories, as always, are the easiest way to segue into a trend. Start with an ensemble of denim cutoffs and flowy print tunics. Blend in traditional bohemian accents such as fringe and leather in the form of a handbag or hair accessories. Then balance the look with harder elements like studs and metal.

As with clothing, jewelry is all about layers. Pile on the wooden bangles, beads and friendship bracelets. Mix in gold coins or natural stones to highlight the vibrant colors of your clothing.

Boho-rock is an unstudied mix of inspirations and trends. Stylistas like Kate Moss, Mischa Barton and Mary-Kate Olsen are big proponents of haute hippie. They prove that to perfect the look is to embrace your own individuality. So go wild, child.

Leighton Meester: Crazed But Not Confused

All wrapped up in Louis Vuitton, Leighton Meester caused quite the buzz at the “Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion” Costume Institue Gala at the Met in NYC.Say what you will about Leighton’s look, you have to admire her bold approach to fashion. I mean, it isn’t east to pull off that many strong statements in one ensemble.

The voluminous shoulders, bold print, contrasting patterns, stand out shoes, tightly curled hair, bright red lips- while this look was a bit crazed, we don’t think Leighton was confused because she sure got everyone talking! All of these elements combined might be a bit too much for everyday-wear, but separately, you have some great trends to try.
