Don’t Follow the Trends, Start Them: Tips To Become More Fashion-Forward

My mission when starting ANM wasn’t just to talk about style, but to encourage all of your to come into your own style-wise and to cultivate your own signature style, one that puts your creativity to the test and makes you feel truly amazing from the inside out.

I am not a fan of ‘trends’ in the conventional sense. I believe that mindlessly hopping onto any trend band-wagon negates what fashion is all about- expressing yourself and showcasing your individuality. Now if you legit love something, notwithstanding its ‘trend’ status, then I am all for wearing it. However, I will never advocate buying and wearing something just because it’s hot and then sending it to the back of your closet when it’s not.

Look at Chloe Sevigny, Mary Kate Olsen, Kate Moss, Agyness Deyn, and Rihanna- all ladies who don’t ever follow the trends, they dictate them. These gals don’t seem to care what other people are doing or what other people will think of what they are wearing. They wear what they love, they take risks, they break rules, and they OWN it. While all of them have very different and distinct styles, all are widely renowned and emulated for their unique styles.

So what separates the fashion-forwards from the fashion-victims? I have thought long and hard on the subject throughout my career in fashion and have uncovered some tips that will help you on your trend-setting way.

Wardrobe Must-Have: Boyfriend Blazers

The boyfriend blazer is without a doubt the number one fall- scratch that- year round must have. I have several boyfriend styles that I reach for time and time again. I’ll throw them over anything and everything- floaty dresses, skinny jeans and loose tees, mini skirts, denim cut-offs, the list goes on and on. There really is no more versatile item- look no further than the collage above for proof.

One thing to watch out for is too much volume, you don’t want to look like you’re being consumed. However, the jacket should be loose enough to allow you to move comfortably. To get the most wear and tear, look for a style that can be layered over a semi-chunky knit but will still look polished over a slim tee or tank. Other than that, there really aren’t many precautions to take because they is no wrong way to wear this staple.I always feel sexy and confident when I top off my looks with bf blazers which is why I’ve deemed this style a wardrobe must.

Get the Look: Boho-Rock Accessories

Ah, summer…the official season of musical festivals and the perfect season to channel your inner hippie chick.

The bohemian trend has seen a great evolution in recent seasons. When the style originated in the 1960s and ‘70s, it was more about a free-spirited lifestyle. Then a few years ago, Sienna Miller kick-started “boho-chic” with her effortless combination of gypsy and luxe. Head-to-toe bohemian can seem a bit outdated these days, but when infused with a little rock ‘n roll, it becomes modern and relevant.

Accessories, as always, are the easiest way to segue into a trend. Start with an ensemble of denim cutoffs and flowy print tunics. Blend in traditional bohemian accents such as fringe and leather in the form of a handbag or hair accessories. Then balance the look with harder elements like studs and metal.

As with clothing, jewelry is all about layers. Pile on the wooden bangles, beads and friendship bracelets. Mix in gold coins or natural stones to highlight the vibrant colors of your clothing.

Boho-rock is an unstudied mix of inspirations and trends. Stylistas like Kate Moss, Mischa Barton and Mary-Kate Olsen are big proponents of haute hippie. They prove that to perfect the look is to embrace your own individuality. So go wild, child.

Summer Must-Have: Denim Cut-Offs

We’ve already discussed the return of the denim jacket, but there’s another retro denim trend that’s making the rounds and is an absolute must for summer: Denim cut-offs.

This season, cut-off shorts are shorter than ever, lending a bit of sex-appeal to this fantastically cool item. From dark to distressed from tattered and torn to structured and sleek, there are so may ways to rock this trend and incorporate it into your style.

Pair your cut-offs with a thin flannel top for a grungy 90’s-inspired style, with a boyfriend shirt like Agyness Deyn, a slim grandpa cardigan like Ashley Olsen, with a sharp blazer for a more polished look like Victoria Beckham and Kate Moss, with billowy tops like Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie, an embellished vest like Nicky Hilton, a lightweight scarf like Hilary Duff, and so on. Cut-offs are perfect for a day at the beach or can be dressed up for a night out with some funky shoes and statement accessories like Vanessa Hudgens who rocked her cut-offs at this year’s Kid’s Choice Awards.

However you choose to wear them, the fact that they’re an absolute must for your summer wardrobe remains the same!

Shade To Crave: Powerhouse Pink

Powerhouse pink is without a doubt the shade of the season and of all the bright colors making the round- as expected with the return to the 80’s- this one is my absolute favorite. While this color is undoubtedly striking, it isn’t obnoxiously loud or too dominating.

Powerhouse pink is a happy median between the sweet innocence of pale pink and the overt sex-appeal of radiant red and has a vibrant energy which exudes confidence. We saw pops of pink all over the spring runways- Badgley Mischka, Matthew Williamson, Christian Dior, and more- all of our favorite designers turned up the volume on their collections by throwing this killer shade into the mix. Pair your pink pieces with neutrals for a more modern look, metallics for a dose of glam, with black for a bit of edge- you really can’t go wrong.

I am not only advocating this shade because it’s trendy, it is actually incredibly flattering for just about any complexion, whether you’re super pale or ultra tan,  blond or brunette, this color was made to flatter and can’t help but make you feel sexy.

Bags That Dress The Part

The hot months call for lightweight American Apparel tee’s and short denim cut-offs and leave no room for dressed up sweaters and tight liquid leggings. To stay fashion-forward in the more dressed-down months, why not invest in a handbags that dress for the occasion? From feathers to sequins these bags don’t make the outfit, they ARE the outfit.

The  SS ‘09 runways were filled with splurge-worthy styles- Donna Karen’s gold bauble bag, tasseled styles at Betsey Johnson,  dolly, embroidered handbags at Anna Sui, and clutches kicked up a notch with floral flourishes at Marc Jacobs. This season’s dressed-up bags can make even your most basic shorts-and-tee combo a total statement-maker.

Just look at Rachel Bilson- a big fan of the statement-bag- who dressed up a basic monochrome look with the  super funky printed pony and snake patchwork Jimmy Choo Kaja bag, $2,695. Or take a cue from fashion heavy-hitter Kate Moss, who added an updated bohemian flavor to her look with the Genevieve Jones Black Fringe Bag, $800.

With glitzy sequin clutches by Prada and zipper infested bags by Botkier it will be hard to look dressed down with bags that scream, “look at me.”
