Date Night Inspiration: Jessica Alba’s Flirty Floral Look post image

A few months ago I came across a picture of Jessica Alba in a gorgeous look on her way to Ralph Lauren’s S/S 14 show at NYFW.  Why I loved it?  Because she incorporated warm weather flowing pastels with her cold weather chunky dark neutrals to create a refreshing take on fall dressing.  This instantly inspired, what I consider to be, the perfect winter date night look.

Jessica’s look will set you back big bucks, but there are easy ways to achieve her look on any budget.  Some tips for perfectly achieving her look include keeping the sweater cropped.  This will keep the sweater from overpowering the skirt and will make your overall look appear slim and clean.  Another tip is to keep the skirt airy by choosing a light, flowing fabric.  Heavier textures will, you guessed it, make the overall look feel heavy so stick to silks and chiffons.

Another skirt tip is to keep the length to a midi or slightly higher.  A full on maxi will also create a heavy illusion but it also really covers you up – it is date night so keep it fun and flirty (and feel free to rock a mini if you’re ready to brave the cold)!  Lastly, if you live in a place where strappy sandals aren’t a fall/winter option, don’t be afraid to try a pointy-toe pump or a classic ankle bootie.  Either shoe option would work great with this look.

Style Muse: Rihanna post image

Style Muse: Rihanna

I love Rihanna.  She’s a super talented singer, she’s a bad ass and doesn’t apologize for it, and let’s face it – the girl can dress.  Rihanna has some serious fashion chops and loves to take risks and some of her looks can be a little over the top, BUT just because Rihanna likes to amp up her style doesn’t mean all of her looks aren’t uninspiring or wearable.  By switching up a few things you can totally rock your own Rihanna-like style.

Here are 5 recent Rihanna looks made more approachable: [Click here to keep reading…]

Oscar’s Red Carpet: Winners in the Fashion Category post image

Another Oscars broadcast has come and gone, but it’s definitely not time to stop talking about what the stars wore down the red carpet (because let’s be honest – that’s what most of us watch for anyways).  There were plenty of hits, always a few misses, but for the most part this year’s fashion choices did not disappoint.

There was a large field, but I’ve narrowed down who I think were the 10 best dressed ladies of the night (+1 addition I just couldn’t leave out).

Celeb Style Muse: Elizabeth Olsen post image

Just when we thought the Olsen fashion powerhouse couldn’t get any better, we were introduced to Mary-Kate and Ashley’s younger sister Elizabeth. As soon as she burst on the scene, it was style love at first sight. It’s not a big surprise that she has killer style like her older twin sisters, but Elizabeth herself is becoming quite the style icon.

What I love most about E.O. is her incredibly strong sense of style and her ability to take on any trend or look without losing that sense.

Read on for three style rules to follow if you want to incorporate some of Elizabeth’s style-savvy into your wardrobe. [Click here to keep reading…]

Celeb Style Inspiration: How to Wear a Maxi Skirt post image

The maxi skirt is by far my favorite fashion piece. Maxis are comfortable, easy-to-wear and give your look a cool laid back feel. The downside is that this key piece can be tricky to wear. When done right, a maxi can be fresh, cutting edge and enviably cool. When done wrong, however, you can look dowdy, frumpy and sloppy.

The most important rule when it comes to maxis is to make sure to keep your proportions balanced. If you’re wearing a flowy maxi, keep the rest of your look structured or streamlined. If your maxi is form-fitted, you can go for an allover streamlined look (add platforms or wedges for a super slimming effect) or incorporate some looser layers into your look.

There’s nothing wrong with looking to famous style setters for some inspiration, especially when it comes to trickier pieces (they do have access to the best stylists in the world, after all). Read on to learn how to recreate the four fabulous maxi-looks pictured above. [Click here to keep reading…]

Celeb Style Inspiration: Emma Roberts post image

For a young starlet who has spent most of her career doing teeny-bopper movies and TV shows, Emma Roberts has shown a remarkable ability to transition her wardrobe from the “cutesy young teen” category to a sophisticated, yet youthful style.

Unlike the many child/teen stars before her, who have been hopelessly typecast and have rapidly descended into career hell (only to emerge on Nick at Night reruns, reunion shows, or mug shot halls of fame), Emma has successfully made the transition to bigger and better roles.  Fortunately for her – and us — her wardrobe has followed suit.  Whether on the red-carpet, at a party, shopping, or out with her current boyfriend, Glee star Chord Overstreet, Emma has demonstrated a keen ability to create a diverse array of looks that are jaw dropping from head-to-toe. In fact, other than her arm candy, I seem to find myself staring at her shoes more than any of the other fabulous pieces she is wearing.

Emma seems to enjoy switching up her style and trying different bold colors, patterns, and trends, selecting shoes that either compliment her outfit or act as the standouts. Blazing her own trail, Emma resists the temptation to wear of-the-moment styles, like those insane thigh-high black high-heeled patent boots made famous by her even more famous and fabulous aunt, Julia Roberts.  Even when Emma’s shoe choices are not intended to be the focal point of her outfit, it is hard not be in lust with her shoe choices.

Of her collection, sky-scraper pumps, wedges, flats, and boots seem to among her favorites, yet her varying use of these shoe closet staples is anything but boring. Varying heights, fabrics, colors, and small details make her shoe collection come alive and make me feel the need to stray from purchasing basic shoe closet staples (mostly in black) and begin having some fun with my shoe purchases! Kate Middleton’s Royal Style Must-Haves post image

Seriously, given the spectacle surrounding the royal wedding, the only people who have not heard that there is a new princess in town must literally be living under a rock! Whether we’re discussing the details of Kate Middleton’s royal wedding, the identity of her wedding dress designer, the size of her ring, the amount of her weight she’s lost, or the frequency of her shopping trips, the public has salivated over every last detail of what has become a wedding for the ages.

The world has literally gone gaga over the royal wedding; even Lady Gaga who threw a  royal themed party to celebrate the end of her concert tour.  While Lady Gaga may be the reigning Queen of Pop, Princess Kate has gotten the attention of the world– and she didn’t even have to wear a meat dress!

While Kate’s fashion sense has already been both panned and praised so many times it can make your head spin, there’s no denying that she is having a major impact on the fashion world and is style icon on the rise. Kate’s aesthetic is simple, yet classic and elegant.  While many have deemed her style outdated and dowdy for a 29 year old, I think it fits that of a princess to perfection. Style Muse: Carey Mulligan post image

Style Muse: Carey Mulligan

Ever since seeing the movie An Education and hearing that she, along with Leonardo DiCaprio, may help bring to life one of my favorite novels, The Great Gatsby, I have become obsessed with Carey Mulligan. It’s not only her noteworthy thespian skills, but also her unique, modern take on ladylike retro fashion. The 25-year-old actress always achieves an air of sartorial sophistication, which truly sets her apart from the rest.

While Carey may at times look young and boyish with that super cropped pixie cut, her personal style is the complete opposite, embodying the ’50s ladylike trend, an enduring style that is flirty, feminine and sophisticated.

One would think that Carey would look like a little girl playing “dress up” in her grandmother’s closet or that she ought to be walking down an on old school red carpet. Instead, to the surprise of many, her modern and quirky approach to retro style brings a modicum of youth to her look, making her the envy of fashionistas all over the globe, putting her at the very top of Harper’s Bazaar‘s Best Dressed list for 2010.

Mulligan’s fashion sense lies in somewhere in the balance between modern and retro; between classic and edgy; and between young and old, a miracle elixir which she concocts by mixing and matching retro and modern silhouettes, clothing items, accessories, embellishments, and patterns. By creating a look with contrasting details, Carey truly creates a stand out style.

Celeb Style Inspiration: Kate Bosworth post image

It can be difficult to look put-together during the sweltering summer months. If I had to pick one summer style muse, it would be Kate Bosworth. Kate’s style is effortless, airy, and laid-back. Rather than selecting statement-making pieces, she prefers to mix and match simple summer basics for a signature style that is always on point but still accessible.

Kate’s summer wardrobe is made up of lots of neutrals, soft prints, ethereal dresses, boho tops, and relaxed-fitting cargos and cut-offs, all of which are highly versatile pieces that can be used to create endless summer ensembles.

Rather than recreating her exact outfits, like we often do in our celeb style inspiration posts, I decided to round up a selection of pieces that could easily fit right into Kate’s wardrobe, if they don’t already.

A Guy’s Take on Female Fashion: Street Chic Edition post image

Sabrina sent me over some pics to review and give my straight guy opinion on “Street Chic Fashion.”

Street chic fashion, as I understand it, is when a girl spends tons of time and money on trying to look like she just threw something on without giving it any thought. Guys have their own version of this when we spend half an hour in front of a mirror trying to make our hair look like we have “bed head”.  Life is funny.

I’ve said it before: I am not a fashion writer and I have no desire to be. But I can look at a picture and give you my male opinion on it, and that’s just what I’m about to do…

Wardrobe Must: A Sexy LRD (Little Red Dress) post image

Bill Blass once said: “When in doubt, wear red,” a sentiment which I fully stand behind! Red definitely has a leg up on black, everyone’s favorite go-to, when it comes to the standout sex appeal and the va va voom factor. I really believe that it’s impossible for anyone not to look, and feel, sexy in red. It’s definitely one of those shades guaranteed to get heads turning but it can also be a little intimidating to wear.

Since red is such an inherently sexy shade, it’s important to look for styles that are slightly more on the conservative side. Anything too short or low-cut and you run the risk of looking cheap, definitely something to avoid at all costs! A perfect example is Emmy Rossum, pictured above wearing Donna Karan. The slouchy silhouette of the dress offset the striking-ness of the color for a style that was sexy, but still fuss-free and relaxed. Diane Kruger’s sheer red Calvin Klein dress was definitely a head-turner, but the knee-length cut of the dress kept it from being too vampy (not that she could look anything less than perfect!). The point is, this color is one that should be embraced and not feared because it looks spectacular when done right.
Every gal needs at least one LRD in her closet and I’ve rounded up 10 fabulous ones to choose from! [Click here to keep reading…]

Shade to Crave: Yellow post image

Shade to Crave: Yellow

Spring releases a fun and exuberant vibe into the air and no shade will get you in the swing or spring like yellow. I’ll admit that I only recently became a yellow-proponent; it really coincided with my new-found sense of color adventurousness. There is something unexpected about yellow for some reason.  It’s definitely not a shade you will run into all that often while walking down the street, but that’s what makes it fun, so why not go for it!

Yellow can be anything from classy to whimsical, feminine to funky, and everything in between. Just look at the celebrities pictured above- all of whom are sporting shades of yellow interpreted differently for styles that range from ultra-femme like Lauren Conrad wearing a Plastic Island coat, to boho like Molly Sims in Calvin Klein, to sexy, like Leighton Meester, who teamed a yellow ruffled Nina Ricci dress with killer lace up booties by Derek Lam.

So what are the do’s and don’ts of wearing yellow? Well first I would advise against pairing yellow, especially bright yellow, with black, that’s just way too bumble bee. There are some exceptions, but overall this is a rule.Yellow will always work with jeans- any wash, really. Yellow, especially neon, also looks amazing when set against nude and neutral shades.

Celeb Style Inspiration: Whitney Port post image

From cute and casual to sexy and standout, Whitney Port’s personal style has undergone quite the makeover since we first met her on The Hills in 2006 as Lauren’s soft-spoken but super supportive Teen Vogue sidekick. Back then, Whitney’s style was very California-casual, ultra-femme, and very sweet.

In the time since, Whitney has grown up, toughened up, and abandoned sunny CA. for the harsher NYC. As she evolved, so did her sense of style. These days, Whitney likes to keep it edgy, bold, and sexy, but in that accidental I-didn’t-even-try sort of way.

Whitney loves to mix-and-match, from contrasting prints to disproportionate silhouettes to soft and feminine pieces teamed with high-voltage sexy ones.

No matter what she wears, she exudes confidence through and through and absolutely owns it. Both her attitude and absolute panache make this girl well worth drawing inspiration from.

Celeb Style Inspiration: Ashlee Simpson post image

If I had to pick one celebrity whose style most resembles my taste and fashion sensibility, I would have to go with Ashlee Simpson, hands down.

Just like Nicole Richie, Ashlee has transformed herself from fashion victim to fashion maven and now has a signature style that is entirely her own and always on point.

Ashlee’s style can best be described as boho-rock. She incorporates elements of both in almost every outfit she sports- be it for running errands or hitting the red carpet- rarely sticking to a single motif. For Ashlee, a boho-maxi calls for some punk-rock accessories, a billowy peasant top will be offset with skinny jeans and converse kicks, and anything flirty or feminine will be toughened up with heavy chains and edgy shoes. No matter what, her style always has that thrown-together effortlessness to it which isn’t easy to pull off.

Ashlee always injects a bit of herself into every look, even when she’s experimenting with trends and styles that are a bit outside of her fashion comfort-zone, and this approach to fashion is definitely one to draw inspiration from.

Read on to learn more about what makes Ashlee’s style so fab and to get the looks pictured above! [Click here to keep reading…]

Trend To Try: Beyond Bright Shoes post image

These woeful economic times have ushered in a push towards the cheerful and exuberant in the fashion department. Bright shades were a big trend for summer and will be a HUGE one come fall. I am especially loving bold and bright shoes as a means for getting in on this trend. There really are no rules when it comes to rocking this look.

At this year’s Teen Choice Awards, bright pumps were the real stars electrifying the green carpet. Cameron Diaz gave her soft gray Alexander McQueen shift dress a jolt by teaming it with a pair of electric blue Pierre Hardy pumps. Leighton Meester took her flirty striped Louis Vuitton dress to the next level with a standout pair of red Brian Atwood pumps. Audrina Patridge wasn’t afraid to really push the envelope, pairing a magenta Zuhair Murad dress with piercing blue Courtney Crawford pumps.

At the CW Upfronts, Ashlee Simpson added an electric jolt to her white top and pencil skirt combo (both from DSquared2) with a killer pair of powerhouse pink Lanvin pumps. Fergie also used a pair of neon shoes to take her look from basic to wow-worthy, teaming a John Richmond Jersey dress with standout Jimmy Choo sandals at the March of Dimes 34th annual Beauty Ball.

Draw inspiration from any of these lovely ladies or rock the look on your own terms, either way, you’re sure to make an unforgettable entrance. To help you on your way, I’ve rounded up a selection of bright pumps that I am currently coveting.

A Worthy Investment: Grandpa Cardigans post image

When it comes to vintage goodies like pretty brooches and one-of-a-kind purses, Grandma’s closet is the way to go. With this season’s shift towards the androgynous, however, it might be time to raid grandpa’s closet as well. One wardrobe staple I’m currently obsessing over the grandpa cardigans- such an un-chic name for something so fabulous but even still. I love the whole boho slouchy feel (okay, really wish I had another word for boho at this point, but whatever!) and a loose knit is the perfect way to achieve the look. I am especially a fan of pairing the sweater over a tight silhouette like skinny jeans and a tight tank; it just has this accidental sex-appeal to it which I simply adore. This style will definitely come in handy over the next few months, when fickle-weather-behavior will be at an all-time high and temperatures can go from comfortable to freezing with the snap of a finger or when its warm outside, but freezing in your office. Or even when it’s a bit nippy out but you don’t want to wear a jacket.

Celebrity Style Inspiration: Rachel Bilson post image

Whether she’s decked out in gorgeous designer duds or dressed down to run errands, Rachel Bilson’s innate knack for style always shines through. For this ‘Celebrity Inspiration’ edition, I’m focusing on her daytime-style which is always practical, wearable, and totally mode. The one aspect of her personal style that I am consistently impressed by is her ability to infuse even the most basic pieces with a fashion-forward flair. Rachel has a strong affinity for investing in high-quality key-items- be it, bags, shoes, and so on- and using them to enliven basic jeans-and-tee looks and she is the master of mixing and matching, paring different silhouettes and styles and balancing the bold with the basic.
