Celeb Style Inspiration: How to Wear a Maxi Skirt post image

The maxi skirt is by far my favorite fashion piece. Maxis are comfortable, easy-to-wear and give your look a cool laid back feel. The downside is that this key piece can be tricky to wear. When done right, a maxi can be fresh, cutting edge and enviably cool. When done wrong, however, you can look dowdy, frumpy and sloppy.

The most important rule when it comes to maxis is to make sure to keep your proportions balanced. If you’re wearing a flowy maxi, keep the rest of your look structured or streamlined. If your maxi is form-fitted, you can go for an allover streamlined look (add platforms or wedges for a super slimming effect) or incorporate some looser layers into your look.

There’s nothing wrong with looking to famous style setters for some inspiration, especially when it comes to trickier pieces (they do have access to the best stylists in the world, after all). Read on to learn how to recreate the four fabulous maxi-looks pictured above. [continue reading…]

A Guy’s Take On Female Fashion post image

When Sabrina and I started A New Mode, I would joke about how I could care less about female fashion and yet we were starting a fashion site.  Truth is, I still don’t care… but now that the site is almost a year old, I am at least familiar with what women are wearing.

Every so often I’ll be working on a collage for the site and I’ll start talking to Sabrina about the things that the celebrities are wearing with my offensively male opinion. Now she’ll probably regret it, but Sabrina picked out a few looks that girls would consider fashionable or ‘trendy’ and asked me to provide some commentary.

I warned her that I was going to be honest.  So before I begin, let’s just be clear: half of these things I would never notice, but since I’m writing this article I looked extra close.  I just didn’t want any women to be confused and think that guys actually care about female fashion. ;)

Let’s begin… [continue reading…]

Shade To Crave: Citrus Orange post image

Shade To Crave: Citrus Orange

From summer through fall, bold, vibrant, optimistic shades are all the rage. The one that is really starting to grow on me is orange- which can serve as an fun, and slightly edgy, alternative to powerhouse pink.

I used to hesitate when it came to orange for fear that I would look like a pumpkin. However, with more experimentation, and the right pieces, I totally warmed up to all forms of this citrus shade and learned that when done right, it can be a serious statement maker.

Blaze a trail in an electrifying neon shade- which conveys an unmatched sort of confidence. Rock a bold orange dress at a black tie affair to really stand out from the crowd- like Ashley Olsen who wore a striking vintage gown to this year’s CFDA Fashion Awards. Try a softer shade, like Vanessa Hudens who wore a Max Azria gown to the Kid’s Choice Awards, which allows for piled on accessories. I especially love the rich orange shade of the Bottega Veneta dress worn by Ginnifer Goodwin, which is fashion-forward but still classic and sophisticated.

You can keep it color-specific with a single orange piece, or merge in some other neon colors for a free-spirited sixties-feel. The most important thing to remember is to select a shade that makes you feel as good as you look!

Summer Must-Have: Denim Cut-Offs post image

We’ve already discussed the return of the denim jacket, but there’s another retro denim trend that’s making the rounds and is an absolute must for summer: Denim cut-offs.

This season, cut-off shorts are shorter than ever, lending a bit of sex-appeal to this fantastically cool item. From dark to distressed from tattered and torn to structured and sleek, there are so may ways to rock this trend and incorporate it into your style.

Pair your cut-offs with a thin flannel top for a grungy 90’s-inspired style, with a boyfriend shirt like Agyness Deyn, a slim grandpa cardigan like Ashley Olsen, with a sharp blazer for a more polished look like Victoria Beckham and Kate Moss, with billowy tops like Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie, an embellished vest like Nicky Hilton, a lightweight scarf like Hilary Duff, and so on. Cut-offs are perfect for a day at the beach or can be dressed up for a night out with some funky shoes and statement accessories like Vanessa Hudgens who rocked her cut-offs at this year’s Kid’s Choice Awards.

However you choose to wear them, the fact that they’re an absolute must for your summer wardrobe remains the same!
