How to Wear Now: Thakoon Fall 2010 RTW Collection

Thakoon Panichgul became a fashion favorite under the guidance of Anna Wintour herself. Known for draped dresses in his signature pretty prints, as seen on Michelle Obama, Thakoon switched things up for fall with textures galore and some animal inspiration, as did many other designers.

The designer played with draping and structure in several looks to create nicely proportioned silhouettes. Among my favorite pieces were the two-tone velvet blazer over a ruffled top and slouchy jersey pant, the skinny trouser, and fur-trimmed everything (Check out the wild tiger-print dress!). I wouldn’t mind being the literal black sheep of the fashion set in that Mongolian stole.

I wonder if Anna or Mrs. Obama will pick up some of these looks. In any case, I’ve pulled some (affordable) pieces you can wear to capture this style now, while the snow and cold air lingers for a few more weeks. Fear not, you can bring most of these pieces into spring.

Jeffrey Campbell Black Belgium Bootie, $190. Our toes are peeping out, meaning spring is around the corner, even if it doesn’t feel like it. Give your toes some fresh air in these majorly cool wedges.

Oak Black Label Blue/Black Combo Legging, $178. Okay, maybe a bit much in terms of price for some, but how cool are these? Very similar to Thakoon’s look, as seen last week.

Uniqlo Peg Top Long Trouser, $19.50. I have these and let me just say you can be comfy and chic.

Gap Belted Utility Jacket, $79.50. These have received much editorial attention, as it should. Look at the price! You’ll be seeing a lot more of the utilitarian look.

BCBG Striped Minidress with Pleated Neckline, $218. Wear a shrug, cardigan or jacket in a contrasting color over this simple dress, but let the va-va-voom ruffles peak out.

Vanessa Bruno Mongolian Goat Stole, $465, NOW: $139.50. What a steal! Get your furs now, while they’re highly discounted and be ready for next fall’s fashion.

Anthropologie Curls & Coils Necklace, $42. Okay, maybe a little spring-ish. However, Thakoon’s rope belt on the runways has gotten me inspired for a little nautical action, now.

VPL Cropped Tuxedo Jacket, $495. There are a million tuxedo jackets out there, I know. But something about the single clasp and the sheen of the satin lapel makes me love this one even more.

Asos Draped Sleeve Scoop Tee, $24.14. Did you see how nicely the draping falls on one of Thakoon’s tops? With this pick, you can get fancy with just a simple piece. Wear a bottom that cinches your waist to balance out the shoulders for a nice silhouette.

LA Made Anuk Drape Skirt, $70. This classy skirt gives your body a great shape and is perfect with just a plain fitted tee and a cropped jacket.

Topshop Shark Print Dress, $310. You might not be able to afford a signature Thakoon drape dress right now, but an interesting print is an interesting print. This one from Topshop is clever, cute and sophisticated at the same time.
