Celeb Style Inspiration: Ashlee Simpson

If I had to pick one celebrity whose style most resembles my taste and fashion sensibility, I would have to go with Ashlee Simpson, hands down.

Just like Nicole Richie, Ashlee has transformed herself from fashion victim to fashion maven and now has a signature style that is entirely her own and always on point.

Ashlee’s style can best be described as boho-rock. She incorporates elements of both in almost every outfit she sports- be it for running errands or hitting the red carpet- rarely sticking to a single motif. For Ashlee, a boho-maxi calls for some punk-rock accessories, a billowy peasant top will be offset with skinny jeans and converse kicks, and anything flirty or feminine will be toughened up with heavy chains and edgy shoes. No matter what, her style always has that thrown-together effortlessness to it which isn’t easy to pull off.

Ashlee always injects a bit of herself into every look, even when she’s experimenting with trends and styles that are a bit outside of her fashion comfort-zone, and this approach to fashion is definitely one to draw inspiration from.

Trend To Try: Beyond Bright Shoes

These woeful economic times have ushered in a push towards the cheerful and exuberant in the fashion department. Bright shades were a big trend for summer and will be a HUGE one come fall. I am especially loving bold and bright shoes as a means for getting in on this trend. There really are no rules when it comes to rocking this look.

At this year’s Teen Choice Awards, bright pumps were the real stars electrifying the green carpet. Cameron Diaz gave her soft gray Alexander McQueen shift dress a jolt by teaming it with a pair of electric blue Pierre Hardy pumps. Leighton Meester took her flirty striped Louis Vuitton dress to the next level with a standout pair of red Brian Atwood pumps. Audrina Patridge wasn’t afraid to really push the envelope, pairing a magenta Zuhair Murad dress with piercing blue Courtney Crawford pumps.

At the CW Upfronts, Ashlee Simpson added an electric jolt to her white top and pencil skirt combo (both from DSquared2) with a killer pair of powerhouse pink Lanvin pumps. Fergie also used a pair of neon shoes to take her look from basic to wow-worthy, teaming a John Richmond Jersey dress with standout Jimmy Choo sandals at the March of Dimes 34th annual Beauty Ball.

Draw inspiration from any of these lovely ladies or rock the look on your own terms, either way, you’re sure to make an unforgettable entrance. To help you on your way, I’ve rounded up a selection of bright pumps that I am currently coveting.

A Worthy Investment: Statement Rings

I absolutely adore jewelry in all forms- necklaces, bracelets, earrings- my collections of all of the following are quite extensive. However, the one accessory I very rarely leave home without is a stand-out statement ring.

From beautiful stones, pretty pearls, diamonds, mixed metals, there are so many incredible styles that, while small in size, can have a big impact on your overall style by injecting a fantastic fashion-forward edge in one fell swoop.

Shade to Crave: Gorgeous Green

Going green in the eco-sense has been a trend for quite some time. Going green in the wardrobe sense is a bit newer to the scene and this shade was a prominent color fixture on this season’s runways. We saw army green at ChloĆ©, mossy green at Louis Vuitton, glitzy green at Balmain, bright green at Lanvin, pale green at Malandrino, pretty green prints at Anna Sui, and many more fantastic interpretations of how to work this shade into your wardrobe.

Greens are more carefree and subdued than some of the other standout colors of this season- like powerhouse pink which is a bit more blatant- and can be tamed for a sleek, minimal style, or taken up a notch for a standout one.

The green trend goes beyond clothing, extending its fabulousness to shoes, bags, accessories, even makeup.

A Worthy Investment: Statement Necklaces

One of the quickest – and chicest – ways to update your wardrobe is by accessorizing. And the accessory du jour is the statement necklace. I, for one, can’t wait to pair them with everything and anything.

For spring 2009, designers are completely enamored with the exaggerated necklace. It made countless appearances on runways – Lanvin, Marni, and Marc, oh my! They came in all different shapes and styles (bib, collar, choker, ribbon, layered, twisted), but only one size: huge. The mantra seems to be go big or go home.

The amazing thing about the necklace is that it hits all the current trends yet is surprisingly pretty democratic. Invest in one gorgeous stunner or dabble in all the trends with wallet-happy picks from Target, Forever 21 or Banana Republic.

Luckily, there’s no wrong way to wear the piece of jewelry this season. Perk up solid tops and shift dresses with a dramatic, colorful neckpiece. For a more casual and unexpected take, try with jeans, the perfect white tee, and major heels. Voila, instant glamour. Despite the traditional school of thought that ornate jewelry should not be worn with busy prints, I say take a risk! The brave and courageous should follow the runway’s lead and layer over polka dots or boho patterns. However, please step away from the bangles, earrings, and rings. This look does not translate in real life.

Bottom line: it’s a statement any way you dress it. But for fashion’s sake, wear the necklace; don’t let it wear you!

Celebrity Style Inspiration: Lindsay Lohan

Lindsay Lohan’s nocturnal activities have been known to get her into quite a bit of trouble- her night-time style, however, is always praise-worthy! When it comes to fashion, this troubled starlet is what all of us should be: confident, self-assured, and fully in tune with her personal taste and what works best on her. Lindsay’s style is heavily rooted in the edgy-femme juxtaposition- she strongly favors black, loves her leather, and always plays up her slim legs with micro-minis or her signature leggings.

During the day, Lindsay loves to rock the loaded on layer look which she usually teams with her ubiquitous leggings. For night, however, she tends to vamp it up a bit more, showing a little more skin with mini-skirts and body-con dresses. Lindsay is the master of balance and infuses even the sexiest silhouettes with sharp sophistication and a fantastic downtown-cool flavor. Not surprisingly, she’s a huge fan of Alexander Wang, the man who put street-chic back on the map with an aesthetic that is just so totally Lindsay (I actually think she might own every single piece from his latest collection, no joke!).
