Backstage for Twinkle by Wenlan gave the nasty weather outside a bit of a run for its money. The colors were bright, the hairstylists used the rainy clouds to its advantage, and spring was definitely in the air. John Ruidant of Redken and MAC makeup artist Gianpaolo Ceciliato gave us the rundown on what inspired them and how they created each look.
Read on to see what they had to say.
HAIR
Ruidant took inspiration from soft rock n’ roll for the hairstyle for the show. Going with one of spring’s hottest trends, the center part, Ruidant breaks down each step to achieve this wearable look. They first started by fabricating the hair in order to achieve a nice rough texture using Redken Fabricate 03 Heat-Active Texturizer and power drying it in.
Next you follow the center part down into the center of the nape and establish horizontal sections off of that. After, spray the section with Hot Sets 22 Thermal Setting Mist and then curl it with a 1” curling iron. After curling, clip each section to the scalp so it has a base to cool off on, and continue with the horizontal sections all the way up until you’re at the top of the head and back to the center part.
Once the hair has cooled off, take all of the clips out, brush it out, and then backcomb just a little bit to create that nice wave and rough texture. Once the hair is all brushed out, it should still have that clean center part with more volume throughout the width of the shoulders, taking on almost the look of a triangle. Finish it off by using Forceful 23 Super Strength Finishing Spray which slightly allows a brush to go through it, but will still give a definite hold to the look.
MAKEUP
Since the designers had a very clear idea of what they wanted the look to be, Ceciliato said the inspiration came easy when creating one for the show. He kept the face looking very young and fresh for the catwalk using MAC’s Studio Sculpt Foundation ($29.50), Prep & Prime Transparent Finishing Powder ($21), as well as Studio Fix ($26).
Complimenting the beautiful skin were nice eyebrows, MAC’s new Crushed Metal Pigment ($19.50) was used to cover the eyelid and inner corner of the eye, while #30 False Lashes ($13) were placed on the top with Plush Lash ($13) in Black.A thin line was placed at the root of the lashes using Fluidline ($15) in Blacktrack.
The biggest part of the look was the VERY strong lip. And when we say strong, we mean strong. The matte shade was orange. Gorgeous! Although he used a MAC Pro product, Lipmix in Orange, for the lips, you can try a MAC Lipstick ($14) in Morange for the same color effect. Calling this look very wearable, Ceciliato says this beautiful shade is perfect for anyone. “Nobody can tell you what products to wear,” he says. You heard him right. Go for it. Be brave and show that sense of style with whatever shade you may feel like wearing!
