How to Compliment a Guy: Exactly What Men Want to Hear (With Examples!)

A lot of women are afraid to compliment men because they’ve been told that it’s unattractive to show too much interest.

This just isn’t true. If a guy likes a girl and she shows interest, that’s a good thing! That makes him happy and makes him want to take things further. What’s unattractive is a needy woman who bends over backward to please a guy and prove she’s worthy of his attention because she doesn’t feel good about herself and his approval will mean she’s “worthy.”

If you like a guy and are pretending to not be interested in order to get him to like you that just tells him you’re immature and he’ll probably lose interest real quick. Now at the same time, coming on too strong and not leaving him any room to pursue you can also be a bit much so don’t take things too far.

But compliments are great. They feel great. Just think about the last time someone paid you a genuine compliment. It’s an amazing feeling.

Read on for compliments that will really reach your man and make him feel good.

1. The “You’re so hot” compliment

Guys don’t have a gaggle of friends posting fire emojis under every one of their pictures on Instagram. Guys don’t really get much validation in the looks department at all, really.

He doesn’t always know that you find him desirable, and it feels good to hear it. So tell him!

“You look so sexy today.”

“That shirt looks amazing on you.”

“Wow, your eyes are mesmerizing.”

2. The “I appreciate you” compliment

Most men are starved for appreciation. Men need appreciation like plants need water. If you don’t fill his tank, he’ll wither away.

It’s not just about the things he does, it’s about who he is.

“Thank you for being you.”

“I admire the man you are.”

3. The “Thanks for doing that” compliment

This ties into the previous point, men love and live for appreciation from their woman. Nothing will light a man up more. Nothing will inspire him to do more things for you than feeling appreciated.

There is nothing more unattractive than an entitled woman. Don’t expect him to do things for you because you think you deserve it. Fine, maybe you do deserve it but you still need to appreciate what he does or he’ll grow to resent you and then you can kiss that good treatment goodbye. Even if a guy does the dishes every night after dinner, you should still appreciate him for it because it’s a nice thing to do! Don’t just expect it, or feel entitled to it because you’re the one who cooked, appreciate it.

“Thank you for doing X. You always know exactly how to solve things.”

“You’re so good to me.”

“Thank you so much for picking me up. I love that I can always count on you.”

4. The “You make me happy” compliment

Another essential need for a man is to make his woman happy. Yes, you heard (or rather, read) that right. Men want to make you happy. If a guy doesn’t think he can make a woman happy, the chances are high that he won’t want to be in a relationship with her. It doesn’t matter how attractive or brilliant or amazing she is. If he doesn’t think he can make her happy, he won’t want to be with her.

Your happiness is everything to a man. And he doesn’t always assume he makes you happy. You need to show and tell him. This is what will really reach him at the deepest level.

“Getting texts from you is the best part of my day :)”

“You make me really happy.”

“I really love being around you, you have such a great energy.”

“You always know how to cheer me up after a rough day.”

“I love when you text me good morning, it makes me feel so loved.”

5. The “You always know what to do” compliment

Men like to feel needed. This is not the same as neediness, though. Neediness is when you outsource the task for making yourself feel OK and whole and happy when really it’s your responsibility. Neediness is placing excessive expectations on him to “make” you feel a certain way. To make you feel good about yourself, to make you feel secure in the relationship, you make you happy, and so forth. Men do not like being put in charge of your emotional wellbeing.

What men do like is feeling valuable, feeling like he has something rare and special to offer you. He likes it when you “need” him for certain things.

“You give the best advice, your perspective is always right on point.”

“I love that you know so much about X. It’s really amazing.”

6. The bedroom compliment

Don’t just assume he knows he did a good job in the bedroom because of your oohs and ahhs, be specific and let him know what he did and how it made you feel!

This one is pretty personal so I’ll let you come up with your own examples of what to say!

7. The “How did I get so lucky?” Compliment

Again, assumptions are not your friend and they don’t let him know how you truly feel. If you feel lucky to have him (and ideally, you do!), then tell him!

Let him know you value having him as a partner. It’s even better if you can be specific and let him know the reasons why.

“You really are the best thing that ever happened to me.”

“I can’t tell you how happy I am to have you in my life.”

8. The “You’re so funny” compliment

There is no greater sound to a man than your laughter. Appreciate his sense of humor, try to notice what makes his brand of humor unique and tell him about it. Laugh at his jokes and give more than an LOL when he texts you something funny. (Don’t be fake about this, though. If you really don’t find him funny at all he probably isn’t the right guy for you.)

“Your sense of humor is always so on point.”

“You’re wasting time at your job. You should be doing standup!”

“Stop being so funny, the people I work with think I’m an insane person because I’m just sitting here laughing”

9. The “thanks for always being there” compliment

Again, it’s about appreciation. It’s about noticing the things he does and appreciating the man he is. Don’t just take it for granted that you found a good guy who is there for you, show appreciation for it.

“I can always rely on you and it’s such an amazing feeling.”

“I love when you listen to me vent, it makes me feel heard and supported.”

10. The “I believe in you” compliment

Aside from appreciation, there is no greater feeling to a man than the feeling of having a woman who is in his corner, who believed in him and sees his potential and sees the greatness within him. That is what inspires a man to be his best self and live the life he wants and be the man he wants to be.

“I know you’ll succeed at whatever you put your mind to.”

“I’m in awe of how much you’ve accomplished already.”
