Backstage Beauty: Vena Cava

Vena Cava’s spring 2010 show brought together MAC makeup artist Lloyd Simmonds and Beauty.com hairstylist Ted Gibson, where together they created a sophisticated yet updated look to compliment the collection nicely. With the use of black visors and dark sunglasses, Gibson stayed away from an “uptight ballerina ponytail” and went for a textured one instead, showing off the girl’s “duel personalities,” while Simmonds created a violet lip (can we mention he made the shade himself!) for a graphic feel to balance out the look.

With both artists calling these looks completely wearable, here’s a step by step guide on how to recreate both the hair and makeup looks from the show.

HAIR
Hair: To create this very hip textured ponytail, start by blowing the hair out. Next pull the hair back by working Ted Gibson’s Tame It Shine Lotion ($19.95) into your locks. Now this is where it gets rough, literally. By twisting and knotting the hair and using the Beautiful Hold Hairspray ($19.95), you then twist it into a bun. There you have it, a smooth, slicked back pretty style from the front, and a very textured back. This updated look will have every girl saying “wow.”

MAKEUP

Face:
Start off by applying MAC Studio Sculpt Concealer ($16.50) and Select Cover-Up Concealer ($16.50) with a MAC 190 Foundation Brush ($32) to achieve a sophisticated matte finish on the skin. Use Prep + Prime Powder ($21) to set the skin and then brush Pro Taupe Powder Blush ($14.50) under the cheekbones to contour.

Eye: Since the models were wearing dark sunglasses, Simmonds created a soft smoke for the eyes. Blend Pro Taupe Powder Blush over the eyelids and along the lower lash line. Next apply Coquette Eyeshadow ($14.50) to the crease of the eyelids and finish it off by brushing up through the brows with the Clear Brow Set ($14.50).

Lip: Simmonds created this matte, opaque violet lip by blending together Pro Lipmix (a limited edition product which is currently discontinued) in White, Burgundy, Blue and Red and applying to the lips. Try MAC’s Lipstick ($14) in Rebel and then calm the color down a little by blotting it to achieve a more wearable, everyday look.
