Achieving your Goals

Goals are an essential part of human existence. Our goals breathe meaning into our every day lives. They push us forward, drive us, motivate us, and inspire us to become even greater. I have many goals- some big, some small. Over the years I have accomplished many of my goals and there are some that I’m still working on. This blog, for instance, was a major goal of mine for years and for some reason, I was unable to lift the idea off the back burner and move forward with it. I have been giving the concept of goals a lot of thought lately and have uncovered some wonderful techniques that have helped me and will help you in attaining your goals and becoming the person you’ve always wanted to be.

Read on for more!

Make a List:
You should always be striving to attain your goals and the best way to do this is to make a list, one that you refer to daily. Your goal list should not cause you frustration or despair; it should serve to excite and to motivate you with thoughts of a better life and more achievements under your belt. Some goals, especially those on the bigger side, will take years to come into fruition. It can be easy to feel overwhelmed by these goals and to get caught up in the thought that such a goal is too far out of reach, but no matter how grandiose the goal, there are always smaller goals that can be extracted that make taking the necessary strides less daunting.

Take Small Strides:

The path to achieving your goals starts with carving out small amount of time each day to do something, anything, to achieve them. Let’s say your goal is something personal, like becoming more confident. We could all use more confidence and this is definitely a goal everyone should have.

Instead of just saying ‘I want to be more confident’ think of steps you can take to get you there. Spend some time every day affirming your positive traits, we all have a few, and acknowledge the things that make you feel great about who you are. In time, a more confident you will suddenly emerge.

Goals can vary wildly from person to person. The one constant is the fact that with every goal, there are smaller sub-sections that are more readily attainable.

Maybe you want to be more fashion-forward. Okay, well then take a few risks, experiment with your wardrobe, try a new trend, play around and try something that you might have shied away from the day before. With that small risk, you will be one step closer to achieving that goal.

If you want a better body, don’t berate yourself for falling off the diet wagon or get frustrated when you’re not a size 2 after a few days of dieting, instead, congratulate yourself for the small steps you take and celebrate the fact that you have a goal and are working to achieve it. Acknowledge the things you’re doing right and don’t let any mis-steps get you down because despair and frustration are your mortal enemies in the goal-game and in life as a whole.

Make a Picture:
Another helpful tool to get you closer to your goals is to make a picture in your mind of what life will be like after you’ve achieved your goal. If you’re goal is great success, then picture yourself in the future after you have already achieved that success. For more confidence, imagine yourself as a fully confident person, see yourself walking and talking with more confidence and envision all the wonderful benefits you will experience (or, in this vision, have already experienced) due to this newfound trait. When you imagine something as being more real in your mind, it actually is much more likely of it becoming real.

The same can be applied to any goal. Having this image of your future self will excite you and drive you forward and in time, the goal your striving for will feel more like a reality rather than a fantasy.

So write down your goals, get excited thinking about what life will be like once you attain them, and spend a few minutes thinking of what you could possibly do that day to come even a tiny bit closer to getting what you desire and deserve. We should all live lives of fulfillment and each of us has unlimited potential. Don’t you think it’s time to start tapping into that? I agree.
