How to Go Sheer and Stay Classy

Sheer is all the rage right now for spring and I’m totally loving it. The reason? It’s the perfect way to cover up a little while still showing some skin and also keeping cool in the warming weather. Harper’s Bazaar termed it “sheer glory” in their “Street Style Trend Report: Spring 2012” online article and if done right you’ll look nothing but glorious rocking your sheer numbers. Here are some of my fave picks and tips to help you get your spring sheer on.

Kaelen Sheer Tunic, $345. This is such a great piece. Tunics are a great look for everyone, they’re super chic, and also super comfortable. This tunic is breezy and light, but allows you to play around with how it can be styled. If you’re looking to show less skin, try pairing a tight cami underneath – something bright would look killer – for a cute daytime look, or throw a blazer over top for night. As for bottoms, try it over pants, shorts, skirts – very versatile. And if you want to vamp it up a little bit, don’t layer – just rock a super great bra.

Zara Wide Printed Trousers, $79.90. I am so madly in love with these pants – yes, my heart flutters a little bit when I see them. Sheer isn’t just safe for on top, you can rock it on the bottom as well, as evidenced by these amazing printed trousers. For me, it’s all about letting the pants speak for themselves, so try pairing these with a plain tee and some serious wedges. For night, pair these with a blazer to pull the look together and a pair of high pumps.

Nasty Gal Chiffon Trench Coat, $68. This is a great way to add sheer to your wardrobe in a subtle way. Trench coats are always a great investment, and this particular one with sheer sleeves is no exception! Try pairing with a cute pair of boyfriend jeans, a tee and flats for day or pair over a mini dress for night.

Christian Louboutin Picks & Co Crystal Stud-Embellished Lace and Metallic Leather Pumps, $1,495. Another great way to get in on the sheer trend is to wear it on your feet. Sheer touches on a pair of shoes adds a touch of sexy chic and is an easy way to take you from day to night. Wear these with a great pair of cropped pants or a great fitting pencil skirt or try a more casual approach by pairing with denim shorts or a flowy dress. K

Affordable Alternatives:

Kate Spade Lisa High Heel, $328. OMG can these shoes be any cuter?! Perfect with jeans or a full skirted dress, these shoes are perfectly versatile and perfectly sheer.

ASOS Lace Ballet Shoes with Bow, $38.27. A feminine and chic flat option – this color works great with everything and the light hue lets you pick up on the pastel trend a little bit.

Other ways to add sheer: tops with sheer sleeves and backs, dresses or tops with sheer paneling, layering sheer pieces over non-sheer pieces, maxi skirts with a sheer bottom, leg wear (leggings, tights, or socks) – have fun getting gloriously sheer!
