Why would he initiate contact with me then take hours to reply and should I do the same?

The world revolves around the sun

People have other things to do. lives of their own to live and also get distracted.

unless someone hacked into your phone and is actually playing mind games with you.

I’m assuming you’re not talking about calling on the phone. Saying hello on the phone and then waiting hours for a response would be rude! Plus, in the 80s, it would’ve run up a huge long distance bill. AT&T’s time was super-precious, yo.

A lot of people treat texting as a medium that does not need immediate attention. Despite the sad habit of a very small minority of people to be “glued to their phone while texting”, most people really don’t consider texting to be a “conversation”. Those that do are constantly confused about everything in the universe. It may seem weird to some people to send a message, then not really pay attention to it, but to other people, it’s perfectly natural because they’re just sharing a thought in the moment and not having a real conversation.

Or maybe he just didn’t like what the response was, I dunno.

Anyway in answer to the second question, do whatever. Respond when you feel like it but don’t worry if the messages seem to trail off. Remember, you can never, ever gauge a guy’s interest, attitude, mood, or anything else through text messages. If it bugs you and you want to have a conversation, then have a real conversation! (By calling him on the phone.)

It’s just confusing to understand. Sometimes I think am I wasting my time, should I just delete and move on?

If this were going good you would not be asking. Delete and move on.
