Just get plain white candles in cute little candle holders. I’m not kidding – it’s okay for them to be plain as long as they’re well-shaped and don’t look cheap. And if you put them on the table and they look cheap or sad, then just put them away.
Don’t think about scented candles if they’re on the dinner table, because you won’t be able to smell the candles over the aroma of the (delicious) food. There’s also the risk that candles that have too strong a scent will overpower the aroma of the food, and that can be a turn-off, even if the candles smell nice.
