Hot and Cold guy now has gone crazy

Hi. I’ve been dating a man for about 4 months. Things have gone very well at times but then at other times my guy will pull away, go quiet/disappear, be cold. When this happens I just leave him be. Normally he comes back somewhat angry that I haven’t chased after him. Ie One time his excuse for disappearing was that his phone broke and that once he got his phone fixed he had 100’s of messages but only 1 from me. (Cause I messaged him and got no response so let him be). And he was quite angry with me.
The other day he became cold and disappeared again and I became quiet (meaning I didn’t chase him but do respond when he finally does contact me). His response was to send me a text message saying he wanted to break up. I said Ok and wished him well.
Now…. he’s driving me crazy!! Begging and pleading for me to reconsider. He’s telling me he’s in love with me and wants to spend our whole lives together, etc.
My question is…. do I give him another chance? Can these hot and cold guys actually change? Should I write him off as a lost cause?
