As a guy , I can admit that we can be pretty tricky to shop for. In the past, I have felt really bad for the girlfriends who got me gifts that I didn’t really like, or had no need for, and felt really impressed by the ones who got it right.
Back in November, Sabrina asked me to start thinking about a list of great gifts for guys and told me that she had done gift guides for guys during previous holiday seasons but never really felt like she knew what she was talking about. When it comes to the holidays and gift giving, I really don’t need much. Most of the time I would prefer that the girl I’m going out with doesn’t even get me a gift – I’d rather she just save her money than blow it on something I don’t need (that I would have to pretend to like).
As I started to thinking about gifts for guys, I realized how hard it is to shop for something I would actually appreciate and want if it were given to me. After several weeks of deliberation (right up to the deadline), I finally came up with my picks for great gifts that virtually every guy would appreciate.
Read on to see my full list.
Cologne: Cologne is always a great gift. Generally speaking, guys appreciate cologne but probably only own one bottle of the stuff, so you don’t have to worry about giving him something he has too much of. Plus, if you happen to date a guy who stinks… bonus. I chose two of my absolute favorite colognes for the gift list. To be honest, I almost didn’t want to include them because I like the fact that most guys don’t know of these colognes. They’re both fantastic.
My picks: Burberry London ($60) CKFree ($25)
An Electric Toothbrush. This is a great gift to any guy who doesn’t own an electric toothbrush already. It’s great for a few reasons: 1) Guys appreciate well applied technology in any way/shape/form. 2) It’s not something a guy would think to get himself. 3) We all need to brush our teeth, might as well make it luxurious. Guys don’t “pamper themselves” like women do – even using the term makes me want to break something – so an electric toothbrush is an upgrade for any guy.
My pick: Philips Sonicare FlexCare Rechargeable, $129
Really Great Headphones: Guys who dig technology (so pretty much all guys) probably already own the TV and stereo system that they want. If they don’t own it, they know exactly the kind of system they want and they want to be the ones to get it. So buying staple electronics for guys (like TVs, stereos, MP3 players, etc.) isn’t the way to go. Something like headphones, however, is a solid gift, since usually guys don’t go the extra mile with fancy peripherals. A really great set of headphones will definitely be appreciated.
My pick: Beats by Dr. Dre Studio Wireless Headphones ($264)
A Nice Wallet or Money Clip: I got a fantastic Ralph Lauren wallet a few years ago that I still use to this day. It was a great gift… Chances are that at the time I was dating this girl, I was using some crappy Walmart-looking wallet that made random people want to kick me in the head. So as far as gifts go, you can’t go wrong with a nice money clip or wallet – they’re very utilitarian.
My picks: Ralph Lauren Leather Billfold Wallet ($75); Gucci Money Clip, ($150)
Sunglasses: Sunglasses are a little tricky only because you need to pick a style that fits the guys face well. You don’t want to buy some great designer shades only to have your guy looking like a Roswell alien. But if you’re confident you have a good idea of what style and shape would look good on the guy, designer shades are a great way to go.
My pick: Dior Homme Aviator Sunglasses ($350)
A Nice Watch: I decided to include a nice watch as a good gift for guys, but it’s not for all guys and it’s definitely not for all watches either. If you can afford to get a nice watch, then it’s a great gift. And it’s got to be for a guy that likes to be a little “fancy” from time to time… otherwise it’s just something he won’t wear. I picked a nice Movado watch that I personally dig – some people talk down on Movado since it offers lower priced models. Frankly, I like the look a lot more that the watches with all the intricate crap all of them – that’s my taste.
My pick: Movado Men’s Museum Black Leather Strap Watch,$495
A Great Scarf: I didn’t used to wear scarves, but now you won’t catch me without one from mid-November through March. As a guy, I always thought they were a dumb clothing item. That is, until I realized that they actually do keep me a lot warmer and the look of a scarf is very refined. Not for all guys, but I’m all for it.
My pick: Burberry Men’s Giant Cashmere Scarf ($475)
A Novel Toy: OK, I didn’t work this item into the collage, but I’m going to be honest – there’s some part of every guy’s brain that makes remote control anything completely irresistible. So, if you happen to just throw this into the mix of whatever else you get him, he’ll think you are the greatest girlfriend ever. He might even be slightly amazed at your savvy… then he will play with it for at least an hour and find ways to annoy you and the cat with it to the point of your own regret and remorse.
My pick: Performer Mini R/C Helicopter, $22.99
