Celeb Style Inspiration: Do Denim Like Jessica Alba

If you’ve been watching Jessica Alba’s street style at all, you know girlfriend was born to rock some serious denim. Our girl Jessica is such a jean expert that People Magazine’s StyleWatch named her their first ever Denim Style Setter of the Year in their October issue.

Not afraid to take fashion risks, Jessica wears every cut, color, and print under the sun and does it with ease. No matter what you’re personal style, denim is a universal wardrobe staple so we can all definitely take some major pointers from this denim superstar.

Read on for five lessons J.A. has taught us on how to rock some serious denim:

Rule #1: Every girl needs a perfect pair of dark, flared denim.

If you ever had any doubt about the chic powers of denim, Jessica puts those to rest with this fab look.  She rocks the long, dark, and slightly flared “Kiki” jeans from J Brand to perfection, looking incredibly lean and put together.  She gets it right with these key elements: a long pair (an instant slim-down secret that elongates your legs and makes them look super lean when worn with heels), a dark denim that also slims and looks sophisticated, and lastly, a slight flare also adds a slimming effect to your leg by opening up the silhouette a bit.  Pairing this with a navy blazer and neutral blouse completed her smart and stylish look.

Rule # 2: A denim vest can upgrade any style.

When we  think of denim, we usually think about our fave skinny jeans or that go-to pair of jeans that hug your curves in all the right places, but Jess reminds us that denim isn’t just for your gams.  Investing in a great denim vest, jacket, or shirt goes a long way and can really play up your look.  Here, Jessica rocks a pretty, feminine maxi but toughens up the look with a shredded sleeve vest from Genetic Denim.  Take a note from Jessica by pairing your denim tops over your fave fall sweaters and dresses, with you favorite jeans or a rockin’ pair of leather pants – you’ll find you can pair a denim vest or jacket with just about anything.  If pairing denim with denim, just remember to keep the shades different, otherwise you’ll find yourself looking like you channeled Britney and Justin at the 2001 AMAs – we all remember the horror…

Rule # 3: Don’t shy away from color.

Another denim tip Jessica has taught us this year – the bolder the better!  Girlfriend definitely loves her bright colors and it seems like her colored denim collection is as expansive as a jumbo box of Crayolas (she’s pictures above in a pair from Textile by Elizabeth and James). What’s great is that she shows us how to incorporate colored denim in all different ways – fun with color blocking and mixing, casual with neutrals, feminine paired with printed blouses, or sharp paired with structured blazers.  Colors can work for a variety of reasons, with a variety of pieces, so if you’re looking for inspiration, look no further.

Rule #4: Don’t shy away from prints, either.

If there’s one thing Jessica shows us she loves almost as much as color, it’s definitely prints.  She’s taught us that prints can still look chic and feminine while still being bold and flirty. I love how she mixes her prints with feminine tops, blazers, and sexy shoes for a more sophisticated look and how she keeps it casual and simple with slouchy tees and tanks and some killer flats.  See, bold printed jeans, can definitely work in any girl’s wardrobe.

Rule #5: A great fitting boyfriend jean goes a long way.

Our denim guru is a mommy of two, so comfortable pants while running around town with two beautiful kiddos in tow is an absolute must.  While some of us may not have little ones of our own, there are still days when comfy jeans are essential to getting through our day.  This is where the boyfriend jean comes in, and Jess definitely rocks the look well in a style from Current/Elliott.  What she shows us is that the perfect fit bf denim can keep you looking and feeling fantastic. The key here is to find a pair that is slouchy enough without being too baggy.  Jess prefers pairing hers with flats, but switch it up and pair with a great pointed toe pump or a pair of ankle booties.  And who says you can’t rock slouchy with slouchy?  Definitely not Jess, as she pulls it off perfectly every time, inspiring us to wear oversized cardigans and boyfriend tees with our boyfriend jeans.
