Backstage Beauty: Julie Haus

From skin care to nails, backstage for the Spring 2010 Julie Haus, which was sponsored by Beauty.com, was all about grunge, rocker-chic. In one corner, hairstylist Oscar Blandi was creating a tousled, slept-in look while celebrity manicurist Deborah Lippmann was applying a smudged finish to the gunmetal shimmer. On the other side, Stila makeup artist Sarah Lucero was focusing on creating a messy yet pretty eye, and Bethany Wojtech for Arcona was going over how the all natural skin care line is perfect for the models’ skin during fashion week as they go from show to show (something that I had always wondered!).

As I spoke with all four of them the message became clear. If it was up to them, every night would be a party. And who wouldn’t love that! Here’s what they had to say.

Hair
Calling the look a bit more avant-garde, Blandi created a very textured and undone look for the show which had a strong and edgy feel. Although he says it may be a little too messy for everyday wear, why not give it a try anyway! Like they say, grunge is in. I know I’ve been known to style my locks like I just rolled out of bed from time to time.

Here’s how: The first step begins with prepping the hair with Oscar Blandi Jasmine Protein Mist ($18). Next apply Oscar Blandi Acqua Marina Styling Gel ($19) on damp hair from roots to ends creating a foundation to natural looking wave. After diffusing the hair, use Oscar Blandi Seta Silk Polishing Cream ($19) to add shine and then Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo ($19) which will amplify the roots and support the look. Top it off with Oscar Blandi Lacca Hairspray ($23) to achieve perfect volume and hold.

Skin
The all natural skin care line Arcona was used for the show to help not only take the makeup off easily, but it caters toward all different kinds of skins, calming it down, as the models come from show to show. The products she used included the following: Triad Pads ($30) which cleanse, tone, and moisturize and completely take all of the makeup off. This product actually tied into the show’s theme of rocker chic, feminine, young and flirty because you know this “girl” is probably not going to go home and wash her face at night. Desert Mist ($32) has a lot of antioxidants which will soothe any redness and calm the skin down. Peptide Eye Serum ($52) will stimulate circulation and eliminate puffiness, making the area tight which will help with applying really heavy makeup on the eyes, making sure nothing will settle in and Eye Dew ($32) will illuminate this area. The final product is Mineral Magic ($38) which sets the makeup and will give the skin extra hydration. This can also be applied before the makeup and even throughout the day.

Makeup
Playing with purples, pomegranates, and cranberries, Lucero wanted to do a color because of spring. Instead of going with the traditional grays, she chose a more vibrant shade to create a worn-in, smudged look for the eyes which were the main focus of the look. Representing a girl who loves makeup, loves feminine clothing, but is still very much aware of her street style, Lucero kept the face looking very healthy and very pretty with a natural glow to the skin, a dark eye, heavy on the mascara, and with a hint of a “just woke up” look. Using a little bit of everything, Stila’s Natural Finish Oil-Free Foundation ($38) and Perfecting Concealer ($23) were put on the overall face. To keep the focus on the eye, she used Stila Eye Shadow ($18) in Pigalle and Bouquet (which was used as the base) along with Stila’s Eyeshadow Quad ($12.99) in Montmarte (the limited edition palette includes a shimmery lavender pink, rich plum, pink pearl, and lavender). The look was finished off with a lot of Stila Multi Effect Mascara ($20) and Perfecting Concealer and lip balm on the lips. And recreating the look is pretty easy too. With the help of a medium-size eyeliner brush, simply wet it and use the shadow as eyeliner. Keep it close to the lash line and you will have an everyday look, and not look like you’ve been wearing it for four days.

Nails
To compliment the dark makeup and messy hair, the color “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” ($16) from the Deborah Lippmann collection (which she created with Pat Benetar) was put on the nails. Sticking with the “undone” rocker theme, the color was first applied perfectly, but then with a little bit of nail polish remover (you can use cotton or just get in there with your fingers just like Lippmann did), they smudged the color up. Lippmann excitedly told me that this look is completely wearable because it takes the pressure off of having perfect nails, as more women are doing.
