    Hi,

Just a light topic but I would like to have your advice !
Cards are not a really a thing in my home country but it seems to be more common in North America and I love to write, so I would like to give a birthday card along with his gift to my boyfriend, but I have no idea about where to draw the line. He is not overly romantic but he said that he always likes to read nice, cute words coming from me. Thing is I tend to be far more expressive and chatty with writing, and I don’t want to over-do it and maybe make him uncomfortable. I really don’t like cards with all the writing already done and you just have to add a name and a few words, I want to do something more personal but without being too much.
What do you usually say on a birthday card ?

    Thanks !

Its really is person to person and how long you’ve been together. Usually the beginning stages (early in the relationship) are much more ‘sappier’ (overly romantic) than when you’ve been together for many years.

I would try and keep it around two paragraphs (a little less than one side of the card). I would let him know how much you appreciate and admire him, as a person, (highlight some of his best qualities) as guys love to be and feel appreciated even if they don’t outright tell you.

I miss the old days when ‘cards’ and ‘love letters’ where the primary medium in expressing one’s love, or how much they are missed you, when apart. I think my generation was the last to receive them—I have a box of them lol

Thanks Lane, that is really helpful !

I wish I had some love letters too :) but my generation is more of the texting-type, not even email that you can keep for a long time.

Its personal but i wouldnt make it too flowery. Its his birthday so not a special relationship day. I dont know how many nice things you can say about the fact he is born but i sure lack in that department. But again thats just me.

You could try moonpig or a similar site and personalise your card and design x

@Lane I’m 32 so not sure about the generational gap, but letters have been common in my life. From family birthday cards in the family to short feel-good notes in camping retreats to letters between significant others. There’s even a new musicician Dermot Kennedy who writes letters (and uploads a picture of it) to his fans occasionally.

I don’t think even the most perfectly written digital message could have more heart than a handwritten letter. So it’s rarer I’m sure but not completely absent, instead even more valued :-)

@Lia I agree that it varies depending on the person. I’ve bought those cards with a bit of text and written around it. Must’ve been a total of 12 lines? Content that’s a mix of various things (sap, wit etc) can help offset the length.
