Shade To Crave: Powerhouse Pink

Powerhouse pink is without a doubt the shade of the season and of all the bright colors making the round- as expected with the return to the 80’s- this one is my absolute favorite. While this color is undoubtedly striking, it isn’t obnoxiously loud or too dominating.

Powerhouse pink is a happy median between the sweet innocence of pale pink and the overt sex-appeal of radiant red and has a vibrant energy which exudes confidence. We saw pops of pink all over the spring runways- Badgley Mischka, Matthew Williamson, Christian Dior, and more- all of our favorite designers turned up the volume on their collections by throwing this killer shade into the mix. Pair your pink pieces with neutrals for a more modern look, metallics for a dose of glam, with black for a bit of edge- you really can’t go wrong.

I am not only advocating this shade because it’s trendy, it is actually incredibly flattering for just about any complexion, whether you’re super pale or ultra tan,  blond or brunette, this color was made to flatter and can’t help but make you feel sexy.

Trend To Try: Rompers

The romper is the most controversial trend to come along in quite some time and elicits very strong reactions of both love and hate. I personally am on Team Romper and happen to love this fun style. The romper is a fabulous alternative to the minidress, which can sometimes be too risqué for day-time and is a great way to show off your gams without having to keep your legs melded together for fear of having a Britney moment.

The one piece, in both the form of a romper of jumpsuit, was a major trend on the spring runways and we saw incredible styles at Peter Som, BCBG, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Adam, and more!

The romper is super versatile- pair it with sandals for day and killer heels for a night out. This style is also super easy to pull off- just slip it on, throw on some cute accessories and you’re all set to go with a fuss-free totally on point look.

Spring Must-Have: Boho Maxis (Inspired by Nicole Richie)

A beautiful, boho maxi dress is an absolute must for spring and summer, it’s fun, wearable, and super flattering. No gal knows how to pull off this trend quite like Nicole Richie , who is always a go-to fashion muse! Nicole isn’t afraid to run with a motif and her looks always have a strong 70s-inspired, hippie-chic feel. She tends to favor vintage maxis, but there are plenty of current styles that are equally fabulous.

A boho maxi isn’t season-specific and can be work in the cooler months with the addition of a chunky knit, sharp blazer, or cropped leather jacket as seen on Nicole above. You can style your look to summon the seventies like Nicole, give it a modern twist by adding in some statement pieces, toughen up this laid back style with some edgy add-ons, and so on. As is the case with any trend, be sure to wear it in a way that works for you and stays true to your personal style.

Trend to Try: Maxi Skirts

Long, flowy maxi dresses have been dominating for a few seasons now so it was inevitable that the maxi skirt would follow! My love of the long skirt was re-ignited at the Vena Cava Spring 2009 show which featured several truly fantastic floor-grazing styles and was enhanced when City star Olivia Palermo stepped out in a stunning maxi style from Jenni Kayne. The maxi skirt is absolutely perfect for a warm spring day where it’s too cold for short or a leg-baring skirt but a little too warm for pants. I especially love the bohemian, hippie-esque vibe of this style.

There are so many ways to interpret this style to make it work for you. You can update it and give it an edge with a sexy tee or cropped vest, you can take it the boho-route and pair with with a floaty top, you can keep it basic with a simple tank or give it a fashion-forward kick with a more embellished style. Just have fun with it and make it work for you!

Trend to Try: Flirty Ruffles

It started a few seasons back and as we move forward, the trend shows no sign of slowing down. I’m talking about the invasion of all things that ruffled! Ruffles were a major trend on pretty much every runway during the Spring 2009 shows- Marc by Marc Jacobs, Malandrino, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Diane Von Furstenberg, Zac Posen, Luella, Oscar de la Renta, Jill Stuart, and on and on. Now I was very hesitant about this trend when it first burst onto the scene, it just appeared a little uber-femme and too sweet for my style. However during one particularly inspired shopping trip, ventured into unchartered territories and gave the ruffled look a try with. The result? Love at first sight! I don’t know what it is, but ruffled styles always seem to have this fashion-forward quality to them.

The most important thing to remember with this style is to make it work for you! If you can pull off sweet and girly, then take that motif and run with it. If, like me, you lean more towards edgy styles, then incorperate some edgy embellishments- a leather cuff, an androgynous blazer, killer pumps, to toughen it up a bit. So how will you know what works for you? Well there’s this little thing called gut instinct which will always guide you through. If you put it on and it just looks all sorts of wrong, then it’s time to rearrange.

I have searched far and wide to track down some the best ruffled styles out there. Shop the looks pictured above and check out some of the other styles I found after the jump! [Continue reading...]
