Fall Must Have: Thigh-High Boots

We’ve all the seen the bootie “rockin’ everywhere,” but the over-the-knee boot is giving our favorite ankle-hugger a run for its money. A slew of these sky-high stunners were seen on the Fall 2009 runways of top designers including Vivienne Westwood, Marc Jacobs, Chloe, Prada, Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Stella McCartney, Rodarte, Pucci, and the list goes on and on.

If you’re a 70’s boho flower child, look to Marc Jacobs’ regal plum number in suede for inspiration. Are you channeling Lady Gaga these days? Then head over to Louis Vuitton for a flirty futuristic version that would make the reigning Queen of Pop oh-so-proud. In any case, be very conscious of how you style the racy footwear to, ahem, preserve your reputation. Think Anne Hathaway in The Devil Wears Prada and stay clear of Pretty Woman references unless they’re from Vivienne Westwood. (Sorry Julia! We love this film beyond words, but we’ll leave the “working girl” attire on set.)

Thigh-highs will give you more wiggle room as they can double as the new leggings under fall frocks and classic trenches. Stella McCartney paired her vegan designs with an oversized sweater for an insta-hit combination. The rule of thumb: when in doubt, cover up! Wearing your over-the-knee boots atop skinny jeans or tights will steer you clear of a fashion mess and turn you into a fashion success.

Read on to see my favorite thigh-high styles!

A Worthy Investment: Statement Necklaces

One of the quickest – and chicest – ways to update your wardrobe is by accessorizing. And the accessory du jour is the statement necklace. I, for one, can’t wait to pair them with everything and anything.

For spring 2009, designers are completely enamored with the exaggerated necklace. It made countless appearances on runways – Lanvin, Marni, and Marc, oh my! They came in all different shapes and styles (bib, collar, choker, ribbon, layered, twisted), but only one size: huge. The mantra seems to be go big or go home.

The amazing thing about the necklace is that it hits all the current trends yet is surprisingly pretty democratic. Invest in one gorgeous stunner or dabble in all the trends with wallet-happy picks from Target, Forever 21 or Banana Republic.

Luckily, there’s no wrong way to wear the piece of jewelry this season. Perk up solid tops and shift dresses with a dramatic, colorful neckpiece. For a more casual and unexpected take, try with jeans, the perfect white tee, and major heels. Voila, instant glamour. Despite the traditional school of thought that ornate jewelry should not be worn with busy prints, I say take a risk! The brave and courageous should follow the runway’s lead and layer over polka dots or boho patterns. However, please step away from the bangles, earrings, and rings. This look does not translate in real life.

Bottom line: it’s a statement any way you dress it. But for fashion’s sake, wear the necklace; don’t let it wear you!

Celebrity Style Inspiration: Rachel Bilson

Whether she’s decked out in gorgeous designer duds or dressed down to run errands, Rachel Bilson’s innate knack for style always shines through. For this ‘Celebrity Inspiration’ edition, I’m focusing on her daytime-style which is always practical, wearable, and totally mode. The one aspect of her personal style that I am consistently impressed by is her ability to infuse even the most basic pieces with a fashion-forward flair. Rachel has a strong affinity for investing in high-quality key-items- be it sunglasses, bags, shoes, and so on- and using them to enliven basic jeans-and-tee looks and she is the master of mixing and matching, paring different silhouettes and styles and balancing the bold with the basic.

Read on for items to help you replicate the fabulous looks pictured above. [Continue reading...]
