Spring Must Have: Trench Coats

A classic trench-coat is one of those year-round must-have items that can always be counted on to up the chic-quotient of your look. A well-cut trench will never be outdated and is a wardrobe staple for current trend-setters such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Mary-Kate Olsen, and Victoria Beckham, to name a few, and was one for fashion icons of the past like Jackie O and Audrey Hepburn.

If you’re a celeb, you can afford a classic Burberry trench (all the ladies above are wearing styles from the iconic fashion house), but don’t despair if you don’t have that much cash lying around because there are tons of fantastic trench styles out there at all price points!

When buying a trench, look got a style that allows for layering underneath so you can get mileage out of this item in the winter months, but still sleek and fitted so it doesn’t add bulk to your figure.

Trend to Try: Neon Accessories

Like it or not, we are slowly seeing the return of the ’80s. Shoulder pads, body con dresses, and even biker shorts. It can seem daunting – especially for those around back then! – but when approached with a fresh and modern eye, virtually anything can be seen as en vogue.

Neon is one of these trends that may be hard to pull off, but can be successful in small doses. If you’re scared of looking like a Post-It or a raver, skip the head-to-toe looks and go for a flash of color via the accessories route. Eye-popping hot pinks, electric greens, and acid yellows were all the rage this spring for DKNY, Doo.Ri, and Isaac Mizrahi. And I am still swooning after the Matthew Williamson day-glo python platforms. Neon perfection if it ever existed, I tell you!

The trick to making fluorescent work this decade is using it to accent neutral colors like cream, dove grey, navy and black. I love the idea of using a shocking accessory to add a jolt of electricity to classic and feminine silhouettes. Unless you want to look like a walking flashback, don’t do neon accessories with leggings, off-the-shoulder or oversized t-shirts, and anything too juvenile looking. Keep it simple and sophisticated.

If the Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs, and Versace Fall 2009 runway shows are any indication, it seems like neon will still be relevant next season. So buy these accessories today and wear them now and later. Glow on!

A Worthy Investment: Grandpa Cardigans

When it comes to vintage goodies like pretty brooches and one-of-a-kind purses, Grandma’s closet is the way to go. With this season’s shift towards the androgynous, however, it might be time to raid grandpa’s closet as well. One wardrobe staple I’m currently obsessing over the grandpa cardigans- such an un-chic name for something so fabulous but even still. I love the whole boho slouchy feel (okay, really wish I had another word for boho at this point, but whatever!) and a loose knit is the perfect way to achieve the look. I am especially a fan of pairing the sweater over a tight silhouette like skinny jeans and a tight tank; it just has this accidental sex-appeal to it which I simply adore. This style will definitely come in handy over the next few months, when fickle-weather-behavior will be at an all-time high and temperatures can go from comfortable to freezing with the snap of a finger or when its warm outside, but freezing in your office. Or even when it’s a bit nippy out but you don’t want to wear a jacket.
