How to Wear Now: Diane von Furstenberg Fall 2010 RTW Collection

Diane von Furstenberg was not short of sheen, shine and sparkle at her Fall 2010 Ready-to-Wear show last week. As expected, she showcased new vibrant DVF-esque patterns, but used her magic touch to amp up the glam, transforming classic pieces into extravagant, yet fun, looks with eye-catching embellishments. Walk into the room in one of these pieces and heads will turn, guaranteed.

The models embodied glamour and sophistication in what would be simple pieces if Ms. von Furstenberg didn’t adorn it all with puffs of ruffles, chiffon rosettes and trim, velvet and metallic patches, crochet embroidery, and, of course, endless sequins. I’m usually not a fan of floral or paillette appliqué, but DVF does it well, always.

Textured accents stole the show and here’s how you can steal the embellished look before next fall. [Continue reading...]

How to Wear Now: Tibi Fall 2010 RTW Collection

When I think of Tibi, I generally think of light fabrics, frilly accents, and vibrant patterns, what I’m used to seeing at Bloomingdales or Saks. I was in for a nice surprise when I checked out the Tibi Fall 2010 Ready-to-Wear show at New York Fashion Week. Designer Amy Smilovic, played with soft and hard looks, combining delicate fabrics and feminine prints with artillery detail and military influence. She did the same with colors, mixing navy, grey, and olive green, with warmer tones like rose and burgundy. I loved that Smilovic incorporated edgier detail, like leather and studs, in a delicate way that kept the softness and femininity of the brand.

My favorite looks? The leather artillery pouch, the cropped silk pant with draping bow, and the endless layering over cotton tees (Tres chic and economical!) All looks I can see on front row attendee and ‘City’ girl, Olivia Palermo.

While the styles shown at Fashion Week are for the upcoming fall and winter seasons—grr, like seven months away—us online editors get a little antsy and like to use these flash-forward trends ASAP. So, we’re giving you Tibi-inspired runway styles you can wear right now. [Continue reading...]

Pattern to Try: Pretty Polka Dots

Stripes have been going strong as the pattern du jour for a while now, unjustly leaving polka dots in their stripey shadows for far too long! I for one an totally feeling the polka dots- they have an old-school sort of charm and can bring a fun, 50’s flavor to your wardrobe without looking dated. While this pattern has been around for a while,  adding a polka-dotted piece to your look still manages to add an unexpected twist.

Stand out in a polka dot dress like Olivia Wilde (wearing TopShop), give a retro polka dot top a modern spin like Cameron Diaz (pictured in a top by Michael Kors and Seven jeans), or toughen up a pretty polka dotted blouse with second skin pants like Lauren Conrad and Lindsay Lohan (both in Rebecca Minkoff). From sophisticated and refined to daring and bold, who knew dots could be so versatile?

Polka dots are instant eye-catchers, so whether your dots are big or small, wear them with confidence! Read on for my favorite polka dotted pieces! [Continue reading...]

80’s Revival: Cross Body Bags

Cross-body bags were once reserved for moms and mailmen. But as with other ‘80s staples that are reappearing for the fall, savvy designers have given it a glamorous makeover. The new cross-bodies are made of buttery soft leathers, redone in contemporary shapes, and adorned in hardware.

What’s so appealing about the cross-body bag? The hands-free factor is liberating. I particularly opt for these styles when running errands or going out at night. I also love how they can instantly lend an outfit a relaxed vibe. Of course, as a fan of contrast, I prefer wearing these casual bags with girly things – frocks, florals and frills. Few things are chicer than a fabulous dress with a long chain bag draped on your shoulder.

To keep the silhouette polished and not juvenile, it’s key to choose a size that doesn’t overwhelm you. Look for shapes that lie effortlessly against your body, whether it be saddle, pouch, or bucket. Don’t wear it too long or it looks sloppy.
Convertible bags earn extra points for its versatility and multi-use purpose. You get two or more styles out of one great bag. Hey, it’s a recession. Shop smart and get more bang for your hard-earned buck.

Celeb Style Inspiration: Lauren Conrad

As much as I hate to admit it, Lauren Conrad is a consistent course of fashion inspiration for me.  She always manages to be on-trend without being hyper-trendy, bold but still polished, and sexy, but still sophisticated. And no matter what, she always looks effortlessly put together.

Lauren’s style is rooted in a feminine and flirty sensibility with a bit of an edge. She definitely loves floaty dresses and bold prints, but always maintains a balance with her ensembles, never going too far with a motif. A sharp blazer to toughen up a flirty frock, a Chanel bag to add some high-fashion to a downtown-hipster look, subtle accessories to keep from overpowering a strong outfit- when it comes to chic minimalism, this girl is the master.

One thing I especially admire about Lauren is that she knows exactly what works for her and always stays true to herself with her choices. Her clothes always fit perfectly, the shades always compliment her complexion, and she never  looks like she’s trying to be anything. Lauren has donned tons of amazing ensembles recently, but I narrowed in my four favorites for this edition of celeb style inspiration.

Trend To Try: Zippered Accents

You know something has taken hold of the fashion world when you’re seeing it EVERYWHERE. It started on the runways, and now we’re seeing zippered accents all over the place- from streets to subways to red carpets, proving that zippers aren’t only functional, they’re seriously fashionable as well!

Zippers have made their way from fly’s, to being exposed on handbags, sandals, headbands, pants, shirts, dresses (like the amazing 3.1 Phillip Lim style seen on Kate Bosworth) and then some.

It’s a tricky trend and sort of hard to find on foot, so grab the nearest laptop and credit card and shop away at the online stores that carry the must have zipper pieces of the season. I have provided a handful of accessories and clothes that will have you zipping through the tabs on your browser to purchase.

Check out my top picks after the jump, happy shopping! [Continue reading...]
