As most of you know (especially those of you who follow us on Twitter), I was selected to be a part of an advisory panel for the new Zync Card by American Express along with several other bloggers. Considering how amazing the card is, and considering it officially launched last week, I would be highly remiss if I didn’t fill you in on all the incredible details.
While I was thrilled and extremely honored to be asked to participate, the fact that I would have to get the card made me uneasy. You see, I’ve always been a debit-card kind of girl. And while I do have a credit card, I keep it only in case of emergencies and fortunately, I haven’t had many emergencies!
When I think of credit cards, I think of debt, simple as that. I know there are obvious benefits to having a CC, but none of them ever seemed worth the risk to me. The fact that the Zync card is a charge card and not a credit card (that just means you have to pay in full at the end of each month, no minimum amount due and no fear of going into debt!), slightly assuaged my anxieties but I still didn’t really see the point in using this card instead of my debit.
That’s where the Packs come in…
Right now there are 10 Packs (prices range from free to $25 per year) all of which are tailored according to lifestyle and spending habits in categories such as fashion, music, food, and travel. Basically, you will get rewarded (and not stupid rewards that you’ll ignore, rewards that you will actually love and use!) for spending money on the things you love and are passionate about.
For instance, the Style Pack ($25) offers 2X Membership Rewards points at department stores and specialty retailer Gilt.com, enhanced Return Protection, and special offers from Gilt and Lucky Magazine. With the Music Pack ($5), you will receive 2X Membership Rewards points on concert tickets, pre-sale access to select music events and concert tickets. There is also a Give Back Pack (no fee!), in which you can recieve 1,000 Membership Rewards points for each logged hour of volunteer service and one Membership Rewards point for every charitable dollar donated using your American Express Card. Additional packs include: Family Travel, Personal Finance, Eco, Go (travel), Connect, Restaurant and Food & Wine.
If the rewards weren’t enough to entice you, here are some other advantages that come with the Zync Card:
- You can build a credit history (something you can’t do with a debit)
- You will get to experience customer service at its finest, something every Amex card-member will attest to. Some benefits include: Car rental loss and damage insurance, purchase protection, return protection, and much more.
- Upon approval, you will automatically enrolled in the Membership Rewards Express program, which allows Card-members to earn one point for virtually every dollar charged
Oh, and did I mention the annual fee is only $25?
Any avid ANM reader knows that I never have and never will endorse anything that I don’t believe in. I am so excited to enter the world of charge-cards and think the Zync card is the perfect one to start with!

This sounds awesome! Thanks for sharing!
hmm.. this sounds very interesting. I totally hear you about the debt thing, I’ve been there and it sucks which is why I no longer have a credit card. This one sounds worth considering though.. cool idea!
