Trend to Try: Tartan

It girls are rocking it, runways were strutting it – tartan print is definitely a new trend to try.  The perfect blend of prep, edge, and Scottish-class, this trend is super fun to incorporate into your current winter wardrobes.  Coming in everything from flirty skirts to playful tights to amazing accessories, adding tartan to any wardrobe is completely doable, regardless of your style.

Here are 10 of my favorite tartan pieces for winter:

Topshop Tartan Blazer, $136. By now I’m sure all of you know that I LOVE blazers, so it’s no surprise that a tartan style one is on the list.  This blazer is a great way to incorporate the tartan look into your wardrobe and it’s super easy to style.  Try pairing with an ashy hunter green t-shirt, grays, creams, navys and blacks also work here, and it can be styled anywhere from super preppy to super rock star.

J Crew Café Capri in Red Tartan, $168. I love these playful pants for winter and they’re the perfect pant to take you from day to night.  I would pair with my favorite slouchy sweater or cardigan for a comfy work look, topped with some layered necklaces and a fist full of rings.  For evening, try mixing prints – they pair these with a fun plaid printed shirt on the website, but funky florals and stripes work too.  Finish off with a great pair of sexy pumps and you’re ready for anything.

McQ – Alexander McQueen Nylon Printed Shopper,  $152.50. Not sure you want to go all out and invest in some tartan clothing?  Then why not try a tartan accessory.  This bag isn’t too over-the-top and it still lets you incorporate tartan into your looks when you’re not sure you want to invest in a super bold piece.  The nylon material keeps thing casual and also makes the bag easy to clean, and even more convenient is that it folds in on the base to create a leather carrying pouch when you’re packing it in your suitcase for your holiday trip home.

ASOS Warehouse Check Pencil Dress with Peplum, $123.13; Now: $86. A classic peplum dress, in tartan?  I’m sold!  This pretty dress comes in a neutral colored pattern, which makes the look less bold and easy to pair with jackets, blazers, and sweaters you already own.  The dress comes with a skinny belt, which helps nip in your waist, and the classic peplum against the pencil skirt is slimming and sleek.  Play up your accessories here and have fun styling your shoes into the look.

J Crew Perfect Shirt in Tartan, $78. I’m a firm believer that at least one classic, well-fitting button down should find its way into every closet, and if you’re looking for that one or maybe looking to spice up your current collection, this is an easy way to do it.  This tartan shirt is easy to style, from casual to evening, so buying this won’t leave you out $78 for something you’ll never wear.  Style how they do on the site by layering over a solid neutral tee, or layer under a sweater or cardi and pair with a printed trouser and some pointed-toe pumps for work.  Or why not try styling this into one of your more formal looks by pairing with a pretty maxi or lace pencil skirt and some sky-high platforms and loads of statement jewelry.

HUE Tights – Tartan Plaid, $20. Tights are an essential for cold weather – not only do they keep your legs slightly warmer, but they also let you add some flair to your looks by playing with color, pattern, and texture.  Try pairing these fun, yet subtle, tartan print tights with a pencil skirt, a sequined skater skirt, a cozy sweater dress – the options are endless.  You can also layer under shorts for a holiday party or mix with patterns to create some seriously awesome contrast.

Christian Louboutin Fred Flat, $625. Ok, so I had to add these not mainly because they are Louboutin but because they’re tartan shoes done right.  A stylish flat with a fantastic tartan print, these shoes are perfect for anything.  Pair with your favorite skirts and trousers for work, with your skinnies and boyfriend jeans for casual outings, or with some leather pants a maxi skirt for a night out.  And try pairing with color – pick out one of the less dominate colors in the print (the blue or yellow here are perfect) or rock with blacks, whites and reds just as well.

Rugby Ralph Lauren Tartan Toggle Coat, $498; NOW: $278.60. A toggle coat in itself is classic, and adding a tartan pattern only makes it more so.  This preppy jacket can go casual to night in a heartbeat and will be a definite favorite for keeping you warm during the cold winter months.  My only styling tip is to wear it how you would normally wear a coat in your wardrobe.

Tommy Hilfiger Tartan Full Skirt, $89.50. I love this super cute tartan skirt and I’m heavily thinking about picking it up to wear to my upcoming holiday parties. This super cute skirt can be worn in a variety of ways to get you through your holiday and winter season, so try pairing with everything from a v-neck tee layered under a slouchy cardigan and a statement bib necklace to a gold sequined tank/top paired under a white blazer.  This is also perfect for work or more casual family events paired with tights and a cute striped tee or sweater.

McQ Alexander McQueen Double Sided McQ Tartan Scarf Oxblood, $184.16. Nothing gets more classic than a tartan or plaid scarf, and this just happens to be classic with a twist.  The rich oxblood color is definitely on point when it comes to fall/winter trends, and this fun scarf can finish off any outfit.  I also love that it’s double sided for days when you want to go tartan and for days when you don’t, which makes it perfect for those who like the tartan trend but don’t want a super bold look.

When done the right way, tartan can look super trendy and perfectly preppy and can create some fun dimension to your looks through the interesting pattern and color combos.  Will you be rocking tartan this winter? Tell us in comments!
