Hair Inspiration: Why You Should Make the Chop post image

Hair Inspiration: Why You Should Make the Chop

After a long stint of Kim Kardashian influenced long barrel waves, cropped cuts have made resurgence and short hair is officially on the comeback trail. So, for you ladies with less than enviable locks (like me), toss those hair extensions aside (like, for forever) and get your cut on.

Need some convincing? Just take a look at these celebrity hair transformations. I think you’ll be running to the salon before you even finish reading!

Julianne Hough’s new ‘do took her from teenybopper to bombshell. This piece-y short style really lets her natural beauty shine through and helps her achieve a more grown-up, sophisticated look.

After a bit of a hiatus, model, Catherine McNeil is back and cooler than ever sporting a textured bob.

Ali Larter proves that a short cut can make you look fresh, not old. Add glamour with waves by following these tips.

If you’re fearful of going too short, follow Jessica Alba’s lead by starting with a Lob (Long Bob) that hits at your collarbone.

Update your entire look with a blunt cut and long, side-swept bangs a la January Jones.

Although Olivia Palermo’s tresses are lust-worthy, they overpower her delicate features. The sleek, shorter hairstyle highlights her beautiful face.

The best fix for a long, thin face is a chin-length cut. Ruby Aldridge replicates Olivier Theyskens’ “too cool for school” cut with this effortless choppy bob.

The proof is in the pictures, ladies. There’s an undeniable sophistication that comes with having shorter hair. Some products I love since I’ve cut my hair are: Bumble and Bumble “Texture”–just rub a nickel size amount starting at the roots, going down to the tips; and, Oribe’s Dry Texturizing Spray–spray on a generous amount to dry hair and style with your hands. Both products give hair volume and texture for an overall cooler hairstyle. If you have thick hair and are looking to go more sleek and shiny (like Olivia Palermo) try Redken Glass 01. All you need is a dime size amount for your whole head.

So, are your salon appointments booked? What do you think of the celebrity hair makeovers above?

None of these styles is truly “short” hair. Do what you like… just keep in mind men tend to find longer hair more attractive as it’s more feminine. Before anyone blasts me, I’m not telling you that should be your only consideration. My last boyfriend told me point blank he loved my look because I have longer hair and it waves so nicely and it’s romantic. He said he finds short hair too business-like. And he hastened to add it’s my hair and I should do what I want, that was just his two cents.

CK, thanks so much for reading! I totally agree with you. If you see in my first paragraph, I mention that if you don’t have amazing hair (like me), going shorter could be the way to go. Shorter hair is trending right now, but that’s not to say that long hair is out. Also, as you can see, there are a variety of lengths and styles to choose from. My point is, if you are trying too hard and spending too much time and money trying to make your hair look a certain way, it might be time for a change.
Ellen, glad you love the looks. Honestly, I think because you’ve always had your hair short, maybe it is time to grow it out a bit. I’m all for trying new things. If you aren’t digging it, chop it!

Love these styles! I’ve been trying (unsuccessfully) for two months to grow out my hair, but now I’m inspired to give one of these cuts a try. I love Julianne’s and Ali’s, but I’m worried their styles won’t look as good on ME. Hmm, I’ll have to do a little investigating. Thanks for the inspiration!

I agree to disagree. Hair should not really be considered a trend unless we are talking about it’s health and elasticity. I understand the logic behind the hair extensions and getting rid of them however, I am a firm believer in “if you got it flaunt it.” It also depends on your facial structure. We are not talking shoes here. Hair can make or break you – it would be pretty rough if you ran out of a salon hysterically sobbing about a bob that didn’t suit you right? Updos are one thing, but there is still something to be said about long and luxorious locks. Nothing against shorter strands, just keep it healthy.
